PetPortions is a one-person project. My name is Alex Baer. I am a software engineer, and I have spent most of my life with dogs underfoot.
The site started with a spreadsheet. When I switched my own dog to a new food, I wanted to know two things: how much should actually go in the bowl, and what that would cost per month. The feeding chart on the bag gave me a number that looked generous, and no calculator I could find knew anything about prices. So I built the math myself: calories first, then cups, then cost. Eventually I cleaned it up and put it online.
What you will find here
The core of the site is a portion and cost calculator that covers 249 dog breeds and nearly 200 foods from 16 brands, both dry kibble and fresh subscription plans. For every food we track the manufacturer's own nutrition numbers and real retailer prices, snapshotted with a date, so the cost figures are estimates you can check rather than marketing claims.
The principles
- We do math, not medicine. The calculator estimates calories and portions using standard veterinary energy formulas. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace your vet.
- Calorie data comes from manufacturers' published guaranteed analysis and feeding information, not from third-party guesses.
- Prices are public retailer prices, recorded on a stated date. Prices change; our numbers show when they were captured.
- The full math is public. See how the calculator works.
How the site makes money
Some outbound links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate partnerships never change the calculator's output: portions and rankings are computed from nutrition data and prices alone. Details are in our Affiliate Disclosure.
