PetPortions is an informational tool. The calculator and the content around it are general guidance, not medical or nutritional advice for your individual dog.
Talk to your vet before making a significant change to your dog's diet, especially if your dog:
- Has a diagnosed health condition (kidney, liver, pancreatic, diabetes, allergies, etc.)
- Is pregnant or nursing
- Is recovering from surgery or illness
- Is a puppy, senior, or otherwise outside the "healthy adult" profile
- Is losing or gaining weight unexpectedly
If something seems off with your dog, call your vet. A website can't examine your dog.
The Calculator Gives Estimates
Our calculator uses established frameworks — including guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and the National Research Council (NRC) — plus your dog's profile to estimate daily calorie needs and portion sizes. These are starting points, not prescriptions.
Actual needs vary with:
- Individual metabolism and genetics
- Health status and medications
- Real activity levels (a "moderately active" Border Collie is not a "moderately active" Bulldog)
- Whether the dog is spayed or neutered
- The specific calorie density of the food you use
- Environment and season
Use our numbers as a starting point. Weigh your dog regularly, watch body condition, and adjust. If in doubt, ask your vet.
Prices Can Be Stale
We pull prices from retailer listings on a schedule. Between pulls, prices change — promotions, new pack sizes, reformulations, supply changes. The price we show may not match what you see at checkout. Always verify the current price on the retailer's own page before you buy.
Cost-per-day and cost-per-month figures are calculated from those same prices and are approximations only.
Product Information Can Be Wrong
Ingredient lists, calorie numbers, and feeding guidelines come from manufacturers and retailer pages. This information can be out of date or incorrect — especially after a brand reformulates a product. Always read the current label on the bag before you feed.
