Blue Buffalo, owned by General Mills, built its name on recipes that lead with named meat and no poultry by-product meals. This page features twelve of its dry foods across three lines: Life Protection Formula, the core range at around $2.21 to $2.93 per pound, plus higher-protein Wilderness and Basics Limited Ingredient recipes that run roughly $2.85 to $3.12.

The spread matters in practice. A 34 percent protein Wilderness salmon recipe and a 24 percent protein Life Protection chicken recipe produce different portion sizes for the same dog, which shifts the daily cost beyond the sticker difference. Our fresh vs kibble cost guide covers how this math works across food types.

About Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo was founded in 2002 in Wilton, Connecticut by Bill Bishop and his sons Billy and Chris. The company is named after the family's Airedale Terrier, Blue, whose illness prompted the Bishops to look closely at pet food ingredients and start a brand of their own. Blue Buffalo grew into one of the largest pet food companies in the United States and was acquired by General Mills in 2018 in a deal valued at about 8 billion dollars. Its headquarters remain in Wilton, and its manufacturing and research facilities are in Joplin, Missouri and Richmond, Indiana.

The dry dog food range centers on Life Protection Formula, the brand's core line built around deboned meat, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Wilderness is its higher-protein line, and Basics is a limited-ingredient line for owners who want shorter ingredient lists. Every dry recipe includes the brand's LifeSource Bits, dark kibble pieces carrying a blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

In its marketing, Blue Buffalo emphasizes real meat as the first ingredient, natural ingredients, and the idea of feeding pets like family members.
