Orijen, from Champion Petfoods, is the highest-protein and highest-priced brand in this set. The twelve featured dry foods all list 38 to 40 percent protein, and prices run from $4.32 per pound for recipes like Six Fish and Regional Red up to $7.05 for the WILD RESERVE beef and lamb recipe, with small breed formulas at $6.40.

Calorie-dense food cuts both ways: you feed fewer cups per day, which claws back part of the per-pound premium, but the daily cost still lands well above typical mid-tier kibble for most dogs. The honest comparison is cost per day, not cost per bag.

The calculator above computes exactly that for each Orijen food, personalized to your dog's breed, weight, age, and activity.

About Orijen

Orijen was introduced in 2005 by Champion Petfoods, a Canadian company founded in 1985 by Reinhard Muhlenfeld in Alberta. Champion built the brand around meat-heavy recipes made in its own facilities, and in February 2023 the company was acquired by Mars Petcare, which also owns Orijen's sister brand Acana.

Orijen dry food is made in Champion's own kitchens: NorthStar Kitchens in Alberta, Canada, and DogStar Kitchens in Auburn, Kentucky, which produces food sold in the United States. The dog food lineup includes recipes such as Original, Six Fish, Regional Red, Puppy, Senior, and the grain-inclusive Amazing Grains line.

In its marketing, the brand describes its food as Biologically Appropriate and emphasizes that the first five ingredients are fresh or raw animal ingredients, with WholePrey ratios of meat, organs, and cartilage. Orijen sits at the higher end of the kibble price range, so the cost math per feeding matters: run your dog's weight through the calculator above to see what a bag actually costs per day.
