Featured dog foods
Some links may be affiliate links — we may earn a commission on certain purchases at no extra cost to you. How this works
Acana is made by Champion Petfoods, the same Canadian company behind Orijen, and sits in the premium kibble tier. The twelve foods featured here span its Classics recipes at around $2.69 to $2.89 per pound, Wholesome Grains formulas near $3.12 to $4.44, and single-protein Singles and Butcher's Favorites recipes reaching $5.65.
Acana recipes tend to be meat-heavy, with featured protein levels from 25 to 31 percent. Denser food usually means smaller measured portions, so the per-pound premium overstates the daily cost gap somewhat. How much smaller depends on your dog: see the how much to feed guide for the mechanics.
The calculator at the top of the page runs those numbers for each Acana food, personalized to breed, weight, age, and activity.
About Acana
Acana is made by Champion Petfoods, a company founded in 1985 in Alberta, Canada. Champion built Acana around locally sourced ingredients and meat-rich recipes, and later added the higher-priced sister brand Orijen. In late 2022 Mars Petcare agreed to acquire Champion Petfoods, and the deal closed in February 2023, making Acana part of the Mars pet care portfolio.
Champion produces its dry foods in three company-owned facilities it calls kitchens: two in Alberta, Canada and one in Auburn, Kentucky, which serves the US market.
Acana's dry dog food is grouped into several lines: Classics, Regionals recipes named after sourcing regions, Singles limited-ingredient recipes built around one main protein, and Highest Protein recipes with the largest meat inclusions in the range. In its marketing the brand describes its approach as Biologically Appropriate, emphasizing high inclusions of meat, poultry or fish and fresh regional ingredients over long lists of plant proteins.
