About Iams
Iams was founded in 1946 by animal nutritionist Paul Iams, who started the company at a small feed mill near Dayton, Ohio. In the 1950s he introduced Iams 999, which the company describes as the first dry dog food based on animal protein. The brand grew under later owner Clay Mathile, who sold it to Procter and Gamble in 1999.
In 2014 Procter and Gamble sold Iams, together with Eukanuba and Natura, to Mars for 2.9 billion dollars in North America and Latin America. Today Iams in the United States is a Mars Petcare brand, while the European rights to the name are owned separately. Iams dog food for the US market is made in US plants, including a long-running facility in Leipsic, Ohio.
The dry dog food range centers on two lines: ProActive Health, the core line that includes the widely sold Minichunks and Large Breed recipes across puppy, adult and senior stages, and Advanced Health, a newer line of targeted recipes. In its marketing the brand emphasizes real chicken as the first ingredient and nutrition tailored to a dog's age and size.
