Purina Pro Plan is Nestle Purina's flagship line, positioned a tier above grocery-store foods and organized around specific needs: age, breed size, and digestion. The twelve dry foods featured on this page come from three families: Complete Essentials Shredded Blend recipes, the newer AdvantEDGE formulas, and large and small breed puppy foods. Most sit between $2.03 and $2.28 per pound, with one small-breed digestive formula closer to $4.75.

Price per pound alone does not settle daily cost. Protein in these recipes runs from 26 to 33 percent and calorie density differs between formulas, so the same dog gets a different scoop size from different bags.

The calculator at the top of this page computes daily portions and cost for each Pro Plan food, personalized to your dog's breed, weight, age, and activity.

About Purina Pro Plan

Purina Pro Plan launched in 1986 as Purina's specialty line sold through pet retailers. The Purina name goes back much further: the company traces its roots to 1894, when its predecessor began selling animal feed in St. Louis, Missouri. Today the brand belongs to Nestle Purina PetCare, formed in 2001 when Nestle acquired Ralston Purina and merged it with its Friskies pet care business. Headquarters remain in St. Louis.

Pro Plan dry dog food is organized into four main lines: Complete Essentials for everyday adult feeding, Specialized for targeted needs such as sensitive skin and stomach, Sport for active and athletic dogs, and Development for puppies. In its marketing the brand emphasizes advanced nutrition developed by Purina scientists, veterinarians and nutritionists, and its long association with professional handlers and sporting dogs.

Nestle Purina operates more than 20 company-owned manufacturing plants in the United States and states that the vast majority of Purina products sold in the US are made in those facilities.
