Hill's Science Diet, owned by Colgate-Palmolive, builds its range around life stages and specific conditions rather than exotic proteins. That shows in the eleven foods featured here: Adult, 7+, 11+, and Puppy recipes split by breed size, plus Sensitive Stomach and Skin and the Perfect Weight formula. Prices run from about $2.33 to $3.93 per pound.
Chicken and barley recipes dominate the lineup, but calorie content still varies enough between the adult, senior, and weight-management formulas to change portion sizes for the same dog. For how kibble pricing compares with fresh food overall, see the fresh vs kibble cost guide.
The calculator above turns calorie data and current prices into daily portions and cost for each Science Diet food, matched to your dog's breed, weight, age, and activity.
About Hill's Science Diet
Hill's traces its story to 1939, when veterinarian Dr. Mark Morris Sr. formulated a special food for Buddy, a guide dog, and contracted with Burton Hill of the Hill Packing Company in Topeka, Kansas to can it. The Science Diet line itself was developed in the 1960s by his son, Dr. Mark Morris Jr., and reached the market in 1968. Hill's Pet Nutrition has been part of Colgate-Palmolive since 1976.
In 2023 the company moved its global headquarters from Topeka to Overland Park, Kansas, while Topeka remains a hub for its research and manufacturing. Hill's operates its own US plants, including Kansas sites in Topeka, Emporia and Tonganoxie.
Science Diet is the company's retail line, sold through pet stores and online and organized by life stage, breed size and specific needs. Its sibling line, Prescription Diet, is a therapeutic range sold through veterinarians. In its marketing, Hill's emphasizes that its foods are developed by veterinarians, PhD nutritionists and food scientists, and describes Science Diet as recommended by US veterinarians.
